How to Measure a Watch Crown

 

There are many reasons that you might measure your watch crown and there are a few different ways of obtaining the measurement that we explain below. Replacing a watch crown is a common repair on a wrist watch or pocket watch because they usually stick out from the watch and are bumped and bent causing breakage. Sometimes you might want to change the crown if you would like a larger crown to make it easier for your fingers to change the time and wind the watch; other times, a new crown can give your old watch a fresh and stylish look. If you order a crown from us, you will need the measurement so that when you receive the crown in the shipment, it will fit your watch. The measurement is in millimeters but the measurement can also be converted into millimeters from inches.

Measure a Waterproof Quartz Watch Crown
(Using the Existing Crown)

 

STEP 1

 

 

Using a digital mm gauge measure the outside diameter of the old crown. This measurement will indicate the size of the crown needed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

STEP 2

 

 

 

Using a watch crown gauge find the opening of the crown by trying each crown on the posts until finding the post the crown fits onto.

 

 

 

 

 

OR

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Use a digital gauge to measure the outside diameter of the case tube sticking out of the case.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

STEP 3

 

 

Using a digital watch gauge measure the outside diameter of the threaded portion of the stem. This will indicate the tap of the crown needed. Or look up the movement number to identify the thread tap or size.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

STEP 4

 

Determine the color of the crown.

 

 

STEP 5

STEP 1

 

 

 

Using a digital gauge measure the distance between the 2 lugs sticking out of the case.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

OR

 

 

 

 

Measure the slight cut out indented into the case. This will indicate the size of the crown needed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

STEP 2

 

 

 

Using a digital gauge, measure the outside diameter of the case tube sticking out of the case.

 

 

 

 

 

STEP 3

 

 

 

Using a digital gauge measure the outside diameter of the threaded portion of the stem. This will indicate the tap of the crown needed or look up the movement number to identify the thread tap.

 

 

 

 

STEP 4

 

Determine the color of crown.

 

 

STEP 5
